DEXA (Bone Densitometry)
What is a DEXA scan?
Bone densitometry examinations (DEXA bone scans) are used to measure your bone mineral density. It is a very simple, quick examination that involves taking images of your bone structure to help determine bone status and fracture risk.
At Radiology Associates of Ocala, bone densitometry exams are performed at our Women's Imaging Center and TimberRidge Imaging Center offices.
What does the exam involve?
The exam is simple, quick and painless. It requires you to lie still, breathe normally and relax while the bone densitometer does the work. No change of clothing is required, however, please avoid metal buttons or buckles. No special preparation is required, and you are not required to alter your eating habits.
Is the exam safe?
Bone densitometry involves an extremely small dose of radiation that delivers less than one-tenth the dosage of a chest x-ray.
How long does a DEXA bone scan take?
Spine or femur measurements take approximately two to five minutes, while total body measurements take approximately 10-15 minutes. Your physician will determine the examination that is best for you.
