| What is CAD? |
| CAD, or Computer Aided Detection, is software designed
to assist radiologists with mammography screenings and
aid in the detection of breast cancer. It acts as a second
opinion or second pair of eyes to help detect cancer
at its earliest stage. |
|
| How does CAD work? |
| CAD uses software based on several thousand cases of
breast cancer, and analyses the mammogram image for abnormalities
or disease based on these cases. The radiologist will
read the exam and then run the CAD software. The abnormal
areas are then highlighted on a computer monitor for
the radiologist to review a second time. |
|
| Does CAD replace the analysis
by the radiologist? |
| No. CAD supplements the review and interpretation
by the radiologist, since the radiologist initially
reviews the image without the use of CAD. |
| |
| Does the use of CAD require
any additional procedures for patients? |
| No. One of the benefits of CAD is that
it does not require additional procedures for patients.
A screening/standard mammogram is all that is needed. |
|
| Will CAD mean I have additional
compressions? |
| No. The number of compressions with
your mammogram is the same with or without CAD. |
|
| Is there an extra charge for
CAD? |
| Yes, although Medicare, Blue Cross and
Blue Shield and other insurance companies have added
CAD as a covered service. If your insurance does not
cover CAD, you will be expected to pay the CAD fee. |
|
| Will all screening mammogram
patients at Women's Imaging Center and TimberRidge
Imaging Center receive the benefit of CAD? |
| Yes. All screening mammogram patients will
be provided with the CAD technology. |
