What is Ambulatory Phlebectomy?

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive surgical method of removing surface varicose veins. These veins are removed using local anesthesia and through micro-incisions which leave no scars.

How does the procedure work?

Skin incisions or needle punctures as small as 1mm are used to extract veins with a phlebectomy hook. A hook is inserted into a micro-incision into the leg. A section of the vein is hooked and then removed through the incision. With this procedure, a compression bandage is worn for one week. This minimizes swelling and discomfort and allows for proper healing.

Can I resume normal activity after the procedure?

Patients can go back to work and resume normal activity after 24 hours. They are asked to keep the leg elevated and stay off their feet for the first day. Also, support hose need to be worn for one to two weeks.

Where is this procedure performed?

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is performed as an outpatient procedure at Munroe Regional Medical Center by one of our Center for Vascular Health's Interventional Radiologist. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call Radiology Associates of Ocala's Center for Vascular Health at (352) 671-4252.
