What is a central venous access procedure?

Central venous access provides intravenous access for administration of medication or dialysis. The tip of this catheter is usually placed in the superior vena cava, close to your heart. Some types of catheters can even be left in place for you to use as an outpatient. When you are finished with your therapy, the catheter is removed easily and with minimal discomfort.

Why do I need this?

There are several reasons why you may benefit from this procedure. These reasons include a need for:

  • Chemotherapy
  • V antibiotics or other medications
  • Long term IV nutrition
  • Frequent blood draws
  • Dialysis or plasmapheresis

Who cares for the catheter if I am an outpatient?
Your primary doctor, or the doctor requesting placement of the catheter will arrange for a nurse or other professional to make sure the catheter is properly cared for. If you have specific problems with the catheter itself, the interventional radiologist is available to perform any repairs or adjustments you may need.
