What is Endovenous Laser Ablation?

Endovenous Laser Ablation is a minimally invasive, non-surgical, out patient procedure used to treat varicose veins. It avoids other invasive surgical procedures such as stripping and legation. The Center for Vascular Health, in partnership with Radiology Associates of Ocala is the first and only to be providing this service is Marion County.

What happens during the Endovenous Laser Ablation procedure?
During the Endovenous Laser Venous System (ELVS) procedure, a laser fiber is inserted into the vein through a tiny puncture site. The laser energizes the fiber as it is withdrawn from the vein. Energy emitted from the tip of the fiber causes only the treated vein to close, while the body automatically routes the blood to other healthy veins. There is rapid recovery and normal activity is resumed immediately. The Endovenous Laser Ablation procedure takes less than an hour and provides immediate relief of symptoms.

There may be minor soreness or bruising, which can be treated with an over-the-counter pain reliever. There is no scar, because the procedure does not require a surgical incision, just a nick in the skin, about the size of a pencil tip using local anesthesia.

Where is this procedure performed?
Endovenous Laser Ablation is performed as an outpatient procedure at Munroe Regional Medical Center by one of Radiology Associates of Ocala's Interventional Radiologist. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call our Center for Vascular Health at (352) 671-4252.
