What is Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE)?

Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) is a non-surgical procedure performed by an Interventional Radiologist to treat fibroids. The procedure involves making a small incision in the groin and passing a small tube called a catheter through the artery. When the catheter reaches the uterine artery, plastic particles or foam are released to stop blood flow to the tumor, causing it to shrink.

What are fibroids?

Fibroid tumors are noncancerous or benign growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. They are usually diagnosed during an annual gynecological exam and confirmed with a pelvic ultrasound. Fibroids range in size from a pea to a cantaloupe and do not always cause symptoms. However, their size and location can be problematic for women, causing pain and heavy bleeding. Fibroids cause the uterus to enlarge, causing women with large fibroids to appear pregnant, when they are not. For women who are pregnant, fibroids can cause premature labor.

What are the results/benefits of UAE?

Follow-up studies have shown that approximately 85 percent of women who have their fibroids treated by UAE experience either significant reduction or complete resolution of their symptoms related to fibroids. This is true both for women with heavy bleeding, and for those with bulk-related symptoms such as pelvic pain or pressure. Overall, fibroids will shrink to half their original size six months after the procedure. UAE avoids the risks associated with surgery and anesthesia. You spend less time in the hospital, the uterus is kept intact, and there is less home recovery time.
