What Should You Not Do Before a Mammogram?

Mammography is one of the most effective tools for breast cancer screening and early detection. There are two main types of mammograms:

Screening Mammogram – Annual mammograms are performed as a preventive measure in women who are free of symptoms or known breast conditions.

Diagnostic Mammogram – A diagnostic mammogram is performed when an abnormality, such as a breast lump, pain or nipple discharge, is detected during a routine dr. appointment or at home while the patient performs a self breast exam. Diagnostic mammograms involve additional views to enable a deeper evaluation of breast tissue.

Radiology Associates of Ocala's follows the American College of Radiology's (ACR) recommendation for women to start obtaining annual mammograms at the age of 40. In some cases, earlier than age 40. When getting your routine or diagnostic mammogram, there are certain rules to follow to help ensure you get the most detailed imaging with as few artifacts (image distortions) as possible.

How To Get the Most out of Your Mammogram

On the day of your mammogram, it’s important to employ the following guidelines:

  1. Avoid using deodorant, antiperspirant, powders, lotions or creams on your chest, underarms or breasts. These products may contain ingredients that can interfere with images, sometimes necessitating repeat imaging, which is not only inconvenient, it can also be stress-inducing.

  2. Don’t wear any kind of jewelry near the chest area, as it may impact imaging quality.

  3. If you still menstruate, schedule your mammogram during a time of the month when your breasts are least likely to be tender or swollen, typically about a week or so after your period ends.

  4. Before your mammogram, inform your doctor of any symptoms, including lumps, pain, nipple discharge and/or skin changes anywhere on or near the breast.

  5. If you've previously had mammograms at a different facility, try to obtain these images before your appointment and bring them with you, or have them transferred to your new facility prior to your appointment. Doing so provides a history that your radiologist and referring clinician can compare with current images. If you need help getting access to previous mammograms, ask an RAO staff member to assist you.

  6. Remain still during the mammogram to help promote clear, crisp, accurate images. And relax – the process will be over in about 10 minutes and every possible step will be taken to promote your comfort.

  7. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your RAO technologist so they can take any necessary precautions.

  8. If you have breast implants, inform your doctor and technologist before the exam. Special techniques or supplementary imaging may be needed to ensure the examination is as thorough as possible.
